Top 10 Longest Home Runs of 2013

The dead summer air has almost completed it’s transition to the breezy, crisp weather that marks October baseball. This is an exciting time for fans of the sport as the almost certain drama of playoff competition begins to unfold. However, it is also a worthy time to reflect on the long, winding road of the regular season that got us here.

The home run has always provided the most allure in the sport, and for good reason. Immediate gratification runs rampant in today’s society, and the pure strength required to muscle out a long ball represents exactly that. The harder, or farther the ball is hit the more impressed by this feat we are. For this exact reason, Talking Baws is going to give you a look at the top 10 longest home runs belted during the 2013 season. Without further ado, here they are:

1. Evan Gattis, C – Atlanta Braves

– Video:

– Date: 9/08/13

– True Distance: 486 feet

– Location: Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, PA

– Notes: Gattis has been one of the most heart warming stories in baseball this year, just a few years removed from a janitor job at a Oklahoma college. The 26-year old rookie has made a routine out of crushing fastballs, with no better example than this moonshot.

2. Hunter Pence, RF – San Francisco Giants

– Video:

– Date: 8/27/13

– True Distance: 476 feet

– Location: Coors Field – Denver, CO

– Notes: It comes as no surprise that one of the furthest hit balls this year was smacked in the high altitude of the Rocky Mountains. Still, Pence’s shot cleared the bleachers and landed on the concourse – not an easy task.

3. Mark Trumbo, 1B – Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

– Video:

– Date: 4/29/13

– True Distance: 475 feet

– Location: Oakland Coliseum – Oakland, CA

– Notes: Trumbo has steadily emerged as one of the premier power hitters in the game. He might never hit for a high average, but his dead-pull ability will keep him fixated in the Angels lineup.

4. Anthony Rizzo, 1B – Chicago Cubs

– Video:

– Date: 4/18/13

– True Distance: 475 feet

– Location: Wrigley Field – Chicago, IL

– Notes: Once touted as one of the top hitting prospects in the game, Rizzo has struggled with consistency problems since his arrival in the MLB. This type of dinger shows exactly the kind of potential that may still be untapped.

5. Mike Napoli, 1B – Boston Red Sox

– Video:

– Date: 5/01/13

– True Distance: 472 feet

– Location: Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON

– Notes: Napoli has justified the free agent deal he signed with Boston this past off-season. The thickness of his beloved beard is noticeably absent in this early season display of pure power.

6. Jay Bruce, RF – Cincinnati Reds

– Video:

– Date: 6/22/13

– True Distance: 472 feet

– Location: Chase Field – Phoenix, AZ

– Notes: Too often does Bruce fly under the radar when discussion of the top power hitters is brought up. All he’s done since he arrived in the league in 2008 is hit at least 20 HRs each season, with 30+ in the past three.

7. Mark Trumbo, 1B – Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

– Video:

– Date: 9/07/13

– True Distance: 471 feet

– Location: Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA

– Notes: Here, Trumbo shows up again as he belts a two-run shot to center field that gave his team an early lead in the first. Fans love long home runs, but they love meaningful ones just as much.

8. Todd Frazier, 3B – Cincinnati Reds

– Video:

– Date: 4/24/13

– True Distance: 470 feet

– Location: Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, OH

– Notes: Most impressive about this towering home run is the fact that it was smacked off a fastball that was only 89 MPH. That’s pure strength, folks.

9. Colby Rasmus, RF – Toronto Blue Jays

– Video:

– Date: 4/06/13

– True Distance: 468 feet

– Location: Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON

– Notes: Rasmus has been sort of an enigma since his arrival in the majors. No one has ever doubted his ability – as showcased here – but his motivation has occasionally been under question.

10. Logan Morrison, RF – Miami Marlins

– Video:

– Date: 9/06/13

– True Distance: 467 feet

– Location: Marlins Park – Miami, FL

– Notes: The Marlins season has been low on highlights, but this was certainly one of them. Morrison’s crush reached the second deck in an already spacious ballpark.
